Bring Back the Sunshine City’: Minister Garwe Urges Council to Rebuild Harare
The Minister of Local Government, Hon. Daniel Garwe, urged councillors to fulfil their mandates and work towards restoring Harare, the ‘Sunshine City’, to its former glory.
Minister Garwe said this during a Council Chambers meeting held at the Harare City Town House today.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Ministers of Local Government and Public Works, Hon. Eng. Benjamin Kabikira and Hon. Albert Mavunga, as well as Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume.
Speaking in the Council Chambers, Hon. Garwe emphasised the need for councillors to rebuild the Central Business District and restore it to its rightful state as a beautiful city that attracts visitors from across Zimbabwe and abroad.
He also announced that the Government of Zimbabwe has officially banned the import and sale of second-hand clothing (commonly known as bhero). “Selling second-hand clothes is no longer permitted in Zimbabwe starting today,” he said.
Hon. Garwe further explained that the government is working to reduce street and night vending in Harare not through force but by educating people on why these activities are no longer allowed.
“The councillors and the government must work together, hand-in-hand, to help restore our city. Councillors should focus on developing their communities, improving infrastructure, enhancing service delivery, and uplifting living conditions,” he said.
He added, “Through strong collaboration between the government and Harare councillors, we can also address issues such as drug and substance abuse, as well as child marriage. The first step is to actively prevent early child marriages.”
