FUZ Raises Alarm Over Unsafe Playing Conditions at Rufaro Stadium

Local professional footballers have raised concerns about the worsening condition of Rufaro Stadium’s pitch and are calling for it to be temporarily barred from hosting Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) matches due to safety concerns.

The Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) has formally written to relevant authorities, highlighting the potential injury risks players face due to the poor playing surface.

The iconic stadium, which serves as home ground to four PSL teams — Dynamos, CAPS United, Herentals, and Scottland — has reportedly suffered significant deterioration in recent months, attributed mainly to heavy usage.

Sharif Mussa, chairperson of the ZIFA First Instance Board, told H-Metro on Monday that the association has not yet formally assessed the stadium’s suitability for hosting top-tier matches.

“Regarding a possible ban on the stadium, I can’t make a definitive statement yet,” Mussa said. “However, we’ve been engaging in discussions with both ZIFA and the PSL. We are aiming to find a balanced solution that supports the growth of the game and protects all stakeholders.”

He also warned that unless the situation improves, the pitch could lead to serious consequences for players and the game at large.

Despite the criticism, the Harare City Council — which owns Rufaro Stadium — has defended the facility, stating that it remains suitable for PSL fixtures.

Council spokesperson Stanley Gama acknowledged the concerns but noted that the upcoming international break would provide a much-needed window for maintenance work on the pitch.

He also claimed that both ZIFA and PSL officials are currently satisfied with the condition of the field.
