No Racism in Our Cricket: Government
The Government, through the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, has firmly assured Bulawayo Mayor Senator David Coltart that it supports Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) in its efforts to contribute towards the country’s Vision 2030 objective of promoting a healthy and educated population through sport.
Over the past few months, Senator Coltart has publicly criticised Zimbabwe Cricket, accusing its leadership of racism and neglecting grassroots development in primary and secondary schools across the country.
He further alleged that the current ZC leadership is fuelling racism, tribalism, and nepotism within the sport.
ZC President Tavengwa Mukuhlani, breaking his silence, strongly defended his administration, insisting that his team is committed to reviving cricket nationwide.
“ZC is not a bank. What we guarantee the nation is that we are working around the clock to bring the sport back. Financially, we cannot be everywhere. However, ZC has projects underway in both rural and urban areas, and we are making progress every day,” Mukuhlani said.
He also confirmed that the allegations raised by Senator Coltart have been referred to the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC).
Ministry of Education spokesperson Taungana Ndoro dismissed claims of racism, tribalism, and nepotism in the country’s sports sector, emphasising that Government has always maintained a strong and constructive partnership with Zimbabwe Cricket.
In a recent statement, however, Senator Coltart blasted the ZC leadership, accusing them of sitting on funds meant for grassroots cricket development, particularly in Bulawayo and Harare.
Responding to the allegations, Mukuhlani remarked:
“I believe patriotism is not defined by criticising those you do not agree with. Unfortunately, Senator Coltart seems to measure patriotism by the amount of criticism he directs at what he believes is wrong.”
