SRC Orders Immediate Resignation of ZRU Executive Over Governance Crisis

The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has ordered the immediate resignation of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) national executive board and committee, citing deepening governance and leadership failures that have brought the sport into disrepute.

In a statement issued by SRC Director General, Eltah Nengomasha, the Commission directed that the resignations be effected no later than Friday, 5 September 2025. The ZRU has until Monday, 8 September to show cause why the SRC should not invoke Section 30 of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act [Chapter 25:15], which empowers the regulator to take disciplinary action against sporting associations.

The intervention comes amid turmoil within the rugby leadership. Acting president Tapfuma Parirenyatwa, who had earlier resigned before reversing his decision a week later, currently heads the union. Elected president Losson Mtongwizo remains suspended over allegations of mismanagement and governance breaches, while women’s chairperson Regina Mwanandiwa has also been sidelined under similar circumstances.

The latest directive threatens to further destabilise the union at a time when Zimbabwe is celebrating qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup — an achievement now overshadowed by administrative instability.
