Four Dead in Mine Shaft Collapse

Four artisanal miners died after a mine shaft they were prospecting for gold in Shurugwi collapsed, trapping them beneath the rubble.

National Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the tragic incident occurred on 4 September 2025.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a mine accident that occurred at Chengxi Gold Mine, Shurugwi, on September 4, 2025. Four artisanal miners died after being trapped in a disused mineshaft that collapsed,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

He added that the victims were prospecting for gold at the time of the accident.

“The bodies of the victims have been retrieved and taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital for a post-mortem,” he said.
