NetOne Drives Digital Transformation and Sustainability in Zimbabwe’s Tourism Sector
By Rumbidzai Rudanda
Zimbabwe’s tourism industry is receiving a significant boost from NetOne, one of the nation’s leading mobile network operators, as it aims to spearhead digital transformation within the sector.
Speaking at the official opening of Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo held at Mutare Sports Club, NetOne Group CEO Engineer Raphael Mushanawani shared the company’s vision to integrate telecommunications, financial inclusion, and sustainable practices to bolster tourism.
“Tourism is a key economic sector in Zimbabwe, and telecommunications plays a critical role in ensuring that visitors remain connected with their loved ones both at home and abroad,” Eng. Mushanawani stated.
He emphasized the company’s commitment to providing comprehensive data connectivity, asserting, “Our goal is to leave no place and no one behind.”
To enhance connectivity for both tourists and residents, NetOne is expanding its 4G LTE network and investing in 5G technologies.
Acknowledging the challenges posed by the mountainous landscape of Manicaland, the company is also pursuing partnerships for low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology to ensure network access in remote regions like the Eastern Highlands.
“This will guarantee network access in even the most remote areas, making Zimbabwe a more accessible and attractive tourist destination,” he noted.
In response to ongoing electricity supply issues, NetOne is implementing clean energy solutions, including the rollout of solar-powered base stations and lithium battery backups.
“We are deliberately reducing our reliance on diesel generators. Our investment is focused on green energy to power our base stations so that we align with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals,” he added.
NetOne is also enhancing the visibility of Zimbabwe’s attractions through improved broadband access in rural and tourist hotspots, enabling local businesses to market their offerings effectively.
Additionally, the company is enriching visitor experiences with its OneMoney mobile financial services platform, which has become popular in rural areas like Honde Valley for facilitating trade in agricultural produce.
“Digital communication is an enabler for financial services. With the expansion of our network, OneMoney is becoming a vital tool for financial inclusion across Zimbabwe,” Eng. Mushanawani explained.
As the global focus shifts toward sustainable development, NetOne is committed to aligning its growth in information and communication technology (ICT) with ecological responsibility.
By incorporating green technologies and reducing its carbon footprint, the company is ensuring that its growth strategy complements Zimbabwe’s aspirations for eco-tourism.
With its investments in 4G, 5G, LEO satellite technology, and renewable energy, NetOne is not only enhancing communication but also safeguarding the accessibility of Zimbabwe’s rich natural and cultural heritage as the country aims to solidify its position as a premier tourist destination.
