A Seke man has been sentenced to four years in jail by the Harare Magistrates’ Court today for the attempted murder of a police officer in December 2023.

According to a statement issued by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) today, Gilbert Dongodza (50) was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, with one year suspended for five years.

The court heard that on 23 December 2023, in Arcadia, Harare, the victim, a 36-year-old police officer, spotted Dongodza brandishing a knife and confronted him.

“The offender threatened to stab the victim and chased him while wielding an okapi knife. The victim then teamed up with other police officers and followed the offender to St Martin’s bus stop along Seke Road,” said the NPA statement.

When the offender saw the police officer and his colleagues, he charged towards them while holding the knife and threw stones at the other police officers.

“Warning shots were fired, but this did not deter the offender. He continued to charge towards the victim, tried to stab him on the hand but missed, knocked him to the ground, and stabbed him below the right eye,” the NPA statement added.
