SRC Suspends Remaining ZRU Officials Over Governance Failures

The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has suspended the remaining members of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) National Executive Board and National Executive Committee, barring them from all rugby administration and activities nationwide.

In a statement released on Monday, the SRC said the decision followed a resolution passed by its Board of Commissioners on 9 September 2025. “The SRC advises the public and rugby stakeholders that the remaining ZRU officials are suspended from all forms of rugby administration, including holding office within the union,” the statement read.

The suspension was carried out under Section 30 of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act (Chapter 25:15) and will remain in effect until the next ZRU elections. The SRC cited the union’s failure to comply with Section 29(8)(b) of the Act as the reason for the move.

A show-cause notice issued on 4 September 2025 led to the resignation of eight board members. However, the remaining officials did not submit responses, prompting the SRC to invoke its statutory powers.

The action follows increasing scrutiny of the ZRU leadership. Last week, the SRC directed the entire executive board and committee to step down, citing governance lapses that had tarnished the reputation of rugby in Zimbabwe.

In correspondence to ZRU Chief Executive Officer Sifiso Made, the commission set a 5 September deadline for resignations. With incomplete compliance, the SRC confirmed it would proceed with suspensions under the law.

The SRC has pledged to provide guidance for restructuring the union and said it would soon announce the strategic direction of Zimbabwe Rugby. Stakeholders and rugby enthusiasts are awaiting further updates on the management and administration of the sport.
