The government has called on communities, local authorities, and stakeholders to unite in combating drug and substance abuse, with a special focus on protecting the nation’s youth.

The appeal came during a multi-sectoral awareness campaign in Harare today, themed “Hachisi Chi Guy Kutora maDrugs.”

Representing Minister of Local Government and Public Works Hon. D. Garwe, Deputy Minister Hon. Albert  Mavunga urged collective action to safeguard young people.

Hon. Garwe, speaking through Mavunga, praised local authorities and stakeholders for their efforts in youth development and decentralised rehabilitation programs. He also hailed First Lady Dr Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa for her leadership.

“The First Lady deserves our highest salute. She has inspired the nation, reminding us that no challenge is too big when leadership and community unite for a safer future for our youth,” he said.

Hon. Garwe emphasised the need for robust community structures, rehabilitation programs, and youth empowerment initiatives to offer healthier opportunities.

The campaign highlighted the devastating impact of drugs on families, communities, and national development.

Speaking on behalf of Harare Metropolitan’s Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Hon. Senator C.Z. Tawengwa, Permanent Secretary Mr Cosmas Chiringa stressed the urgency of the issue.

“Through collective action, let us shield, guide, and empower our youth so they can lead drug-free lives. We must invest in their future and provide the tools they need to succeed in their education,” Tawengwa said.

The event featured exhibitions of community-based rehabilitation and youth empowerment projects, attended by senior government officials, Junior Parliamentarians, schools, churches, and development partners.

The government’s renewed push signals a determined effort to build a drug-free Zimbabwe.
