Harare Waste Crisis Eased Following Geo Pomona Takeover of Refuse Collection
Harare’s streets are noticeably cleaner following the takeover of residential waste collection by Geo Pomona Waste Management Private Limited, the city council confirmed.
The move comes after years of overflowing bins, illegal dumping, and public health risks, including cholera and typhoid outbreaks, which prompted President Emmerson Mnangagwa in October 2023 to declare a state of disaster over the city’s solid waste crisis.
Geo Pomona assumed responsibility for refuse collection in January 2025 and has reported collecting 650 tonnes of waste daily. The company has also upgraded the Pomona dumpsite with modern waste-to-energy systems, introducing European-standard operational practices at reduced costs.
Dr. Dilesh Nguwaya, CEO and Executive Chairman of Geo Pomona, said the company had transformed the dumpsite into a “world-class facility” and aimed to set benchmarks for sustainable urban waste management in Africa.
Residents of areas such as Warren Park and Mbare have expressed relief at the improved sanitation, citing unblocked drains and cleaner streets. Local environmental advocates noted the development as a significant step toward sustainable urban living in Zimbabwe’s capital.
Geo Pomona’s operations have also introduced initiatives for recycling, composting, and long-term waste reduction, signaling a shift toward more sustainable waste management practices.
