Prophetess Arrested After Woman Dies in Home Childbirth
Police have arrested a self-proclaimed prophetess in Glen Norah after a woman died during a home childbirth, leading to the discovery of a bucket containing human body parts at the suspect’s residence.
The suspect, identified as Rumbidzayi Sanyamvura, popularly known as Madzimai Rumbi, allegedly assisted 36-year-old Ms Misoya to deliver her child at her home last Tuesday. Shortly after giving birth, the mother collapsed and died.
A post-mortem conducted at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital revealed that the death was caused by complications linked to high blood pressure.
Police said the matter only came to their attention on Saturday. When officers arrived at Sanyamvura’s home, she allegedly produced a bucket containing teeth, intestines, an umbilical cord and blood, which she claimed belonged to the deceased.
The items were seized and sent, together with the deceased’s body, back to Sally Mugabe Hospital for forensic analysis and DNA testing.
Confirming the arrest, Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza said investigations were still underway and that the deceased’s burial had been suspended until further examinations are complete.
The incident has raised concern in Rumbidzayi Sanyamvura where self-styled prophets and traditional healers continue to operate despite repeated warnings from health authorities. Police have urged members of the public to seek proper medical services when dealing with maternal health issues.
Investigations are continuing.
