Sandvik Wins SEK 280m Equipment Deal with Zimplats
Sandvik has landed a significant contract valued at approximately SEK 280 million from Zimbabwe Platinum Mines (Zimplats) to deliver underground mining equipment for its Ngezi complex.
The order comprises 12 Toro® LH209L loaders, six Sandvik DD211L development jumbos, five Sandvik DS211L-V bolters, three Toro TH545i haul trucks, and two Sandvik TH430L trucks.
Deliveries will roll out from the third quarter of 2025 and continue until the second quarter of 2026. The agreement also includes supply of spare parts and service kits to ensure sustained efficiency of the fleet.
Ngezi, one of Zimbabwe’s largest platinum group metals (PGM) operations, is transitioning from open-pit to underground mining. To support this shift, Zimplats is channeling significant investment into expanding underground capacity through new shafts and concentrators.
“We are delighted to collaborate with Zimplats on this important underground mining expansion,” said Mats Eriksson, President of Sandvik Mining. “The order underscores our dedication to supplying dependable, purpose-built equipment and solutions that enable our customers to achieve their goals in productivity, safety, and sustainability.”
Zimplats, which is 87% controlled by Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd, highlighted that the fleet purchase aligns with its long-term strategy to bolster underground operations.
“This new Sandvik fleet is a critical investment in strengthening our underground mining capability while maintaining safe, efficient, and sustainable operations. Partnering with Sandvik assures us of reliable equipment backed by consistent service,” noted Zimplats CEO Alexander Mhembere.
The agreement is also expected to generate significant aftermarket business as Sandvik continues to provide parts and service support for the Ngezi mines.
