Daring Armed Robber Hospital Escape Foiled

A suspected armed robber staged a daring, movie-style escape attempt while being held at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals under the supervision of a prison guard.

According to sources at the hospital, the escape was allegedly aided by the robber’s wife and sister.

The suspect, identified as Simbarashe Makunura, had been transferred from Chikurubi Maximum Prison prior to the botched attempt. He was receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness and injuries.

During his stay at the hospital, Makunura’s wife regularly brought him food.

“On 20 September 2025, during a visit, his wife, Delight Nhepera, took advantage of a newly formed friendship with the prison guard and snatched his rifle while he was off guard. She immediately pointed the weapon at the guard, ordering her bedridden husband to dress. She then handed the rifle to her husband so they could escape,” said the source.

Makunura’s sister was reportedly also involved in the escape plan.

During the ensuing standoff, the prison guard reacted and jumped on the armed robber.

“The two wrestled for several minutes, during which the gun discharged three times. Fortunately, the prison guard managed to overpower and disarm the suspect, who was immediately handcuffed,” the source added.

When contacted for comment, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals referred questions to the police, who confirmed that gunshots had been fired at the facility.

After realizing her husband had been disarmed, Makunura’s wife fled the scene. Police sources said a manhunt has been launched to track down both women.

National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi could not be reached for comment at the time of writing.
