Finance Ministry Takes Tax Awareness Drive to Chiredzi
The Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion on Thursday extended its national tax awareness programme to Chiredzi, in a bid to highlight how government revenue collection underpins development projects across the country.
The campaign, themed “Your Tax Works – See the Change in Your Community,” is designed to educate citizens on the importance of taxes in funding infrastructure, public services, and other government initiatives.
Officials explained that the outreach is not only about raising awareness but also about encouraging a culture of tax compliance by showing the real benefits that communities receive when citizens contribute.
Stakeholders in Chiredzi—including sugarcane farmers, small business operators, and traditional leaders—welcomed the initiative, saying it helps people better understand how their taxes fuel socio-economic growth.
“These kinds of meetings are critical for the business sector. When authorities explain how tax compliance links directly to national planning, it motivates us to meet our obligations,” said one local entrepreneur.
Another participant added: “The government relies on tax revenue. It’s important for people to know how that money is being used to improve our communities.”
Traditional leader Chief Tshovani echoed the sentiment, describing the programme as an “eye-opener” for farmers and small enterprises, many of whom had little knowledge about the broader role of taxation.
Speaking during the outreach, Ministry spokesperson Ms. Pretty Moyo revealed that government is already reviewing regulatory fees to ease the tax burden on businesses.
“From our engagements so far, one of the major concerns has been high regulatory costs. Business owners are pleased that the government has taken this on board and begun lowering these fees. This makes businesses more viable and encourages formalisation,” she said.
Authorities expect the campaign to enhance compliance levels nationwide, an outcome regarded as crucial for achieving sustained economic growth.
