A 14-year-old golfer, Munesu Chimhini, will captain Zimbabwe’s junior team at the upcoming 2025 Golf World Amateur Championships, set to tee off in Singapore next week.

Chimhini, a Form 2 student at St George’s College in Harare, has been tipped as one of the country’s brightest prospects in the sport. Despite his age, he has already made waves on the local golfing scene, clinching the prestigious Hillside Masters title earlier this year — a performance that earned him recognition as a rising star in Zimbabwean golf.

National team selectors have placed their confidence in Chimhini’s abilities, naming him skipper of the three-man squad that also includes Elton Zulu and Darlington Chikanyambidze. The trio will carry the nation’s hopes on one of the sport’s biggest global stages, where they will face opponents from dozens of countries across different age categories.

Golf Union of Zimbabwe officials say the teenager’s consistency and composure under pressure set him apart. “Munesu has demonstrated not only technical skill but also maturity beyond his years,” said a team official. “We believe he will represent the country with pride and set the tone for his teammates.”

Chimhini himself has been training intensively ahead of the tournament, balancing his schoolwork with a demanding practice schedule. At St George’s, his teachers and fellow pupils describe him as disciplined and hardworking, with an ambition to make golf his lifelong pursuit.

For Zimbabwe, participation at the World Amateur Championships provides both exposure and experience for its young players, who rarely get the opportunity to compete in such high-profile international events. The Singapore competition, running over several days, is expected to attract scouts, coaches, and golfing enthusiasts from around the world.

As the youngest captain to lead a Zimbabwean golf team in recent years, Chimhini carries both the weight of expectation and the excitement of possibility. Whether or not he returns with silverware, his journey is already being hailed as an inspiring story of youthful talent and determination.

The Zimbabwean contingent is set to depart for Singapore over the weekend, with their opening round scheduled for early next week.
