ZRP Clears Air on Harare Kombi Driver’s Death

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have dismissed allegations that officers were responsible for a fatal accident in Harare that claimed the life of a commuter omnibus driver on Friday, October 3.

Images of the wrecked vehicle circulated widely on social media, with some users alleging that the driver crashed while attempting to evade a police motorbike.

However, in a statement issued on Saturday, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi rejected the claims, describing them as misleading.

“The ZRP wishes to clarify the circumstances surrounding a road traffic accident involving a Toyota Hiace kombi and an Isuzu D-Max along Tongogara Avenue near the Blakiston Street intersection. Unfortunately, the kombi driver died in the collision,” said Comm. Nyathi.

“For the record, there was no police chase or confrontation with the kombi crew. The ZRP team on a motorcycle was not involved. Video footage from the scene and the camcorder from the deployed officers confirm this,” he added.

Commissioner Nyathi further cautioned the public against spreading false narratives online, stressing that misinformation only fuels unnecessary tension.
