Héctor Bellerín: The Defender Driving Change — On and Off the Pitch

When most footballers arrive at training, it’s usually in a luxury car. But for Real Betis defender Héctor Bellerín, sustainability takes the front seat — quite literally. The Spanish international often pedals to training on his bicycle or hops on public transport, a small act that reflects a much bigger message.

“It would be easier to take a cab,” he says. “But we need greener cities with fewer cars.”

At 30, Bellerín has become one of football’s leading voices for environmental awareness, using his platform of over 3.7 million social media followers to promote sustainable living. His passion for the planet recently earned him the BBC Green Sport Award, recognition for years spent championing a more eco-conscious lifestyle.

Bellerín’s journey toward sustainability began during his decade at Arsenal, heavily influenced by former manager Arsène Wenger. “He taught me about empathy, compassion, and living holistically,” Bellerín reflects. “Those values go hand in hand with sustainability.”

Yet he’s aware of football’s contradictions — a sport defined by constant travel and commercial expansion. “Players are often treated like numbers,” he admits. “There’s more games, more travel, and tougher conditions. But we still have a voice, and I’ll keep using mine.”

Bellerín believes true change will only come when players unite, drawing inspiration from the women’s game. “They’ve shown what solidarity can achieve,” he says. “If we as footballers found that same courage, the world would be a different place.”

His recent award, revealed to him by a close teammate, came as a surprise. “I’m proud and grateful,” he smiles. “This recognition means the message — and the work behind it — is being seen.”

For Bellerín, football isn’t just about goals and glory. It’s about using the beautiful game to make the world a little greener.
