Glen View Residents Outraged as Council Orders Removal of Lifeline Borehole

The City of Harare has ordered the removal of a community solar-powered borehole in Ward 31, Glen View, within 48 hours to make way for the development of four infill residential stands.

The decision has sparked outrage among residents, who say the move will severely affect their access to clean water. The borehole, which serves approximately 2,800 residents, has been a vital lifeline in a community where water shortages are frequent.

Residents fear that removing the borehole will force families to rely on unsafe water sources, worsening health and sanitation challenges in the area.

According to a statement issued by the City Council, the community has been urged to remove the borehole and clear all rubble around the site within 48 hours.

“Take note that you are using and/or occupying council land illegally, as you do not have either a lease or the permission of the council. Depart from the land, remove all property from the land, demolish any structure erected on the land, and remove all the rubble from the land.

If you fail to comply with this notice, steps will be taken by either Council or its appointed agent to summarily evict you, demolish any structures, and impound any property from the land. You will be liable for all expenses incurred,” said the City Council statement.

The notice further stated that impounded goods may be claimed within 48 hours of impoundment upon payment of administrative and storage charges. Items not collected within three months from the date of impoundment will be auctioned to recover expenses incurred.
