Mutare Duo Jailed 45 Years for Killing Prison Officer

Two Mutare men, Brighton Gowero (29) and Takunda Makoni (21), have been sentenced to 45 years in prison each for the murd@r of Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services officer Tapiwa Mutyasira (29).

According to a statement issued by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPA), the two men were convicted for the murd@r of Mutyasira, whose body was found dumped on the Mutare-Harare railway line in Chikanga.

“Between 3  and 4 March 2023, the offenders, Gowero and  Makoni,  together with an accomplice identified as Courage, who is currently on the run, brutally assaulted the now deceased with unknown objects, causing fatal injuries,” said the NPA statement.

They stole his two cellphones and dumped his body on the railway line in an attempt to conceal the murder, which was committed during the robbery.

“The deceased’s remains were later run over by a goods train, whose driver initially mistook the body for discarded material on the track. A post-mortem carried out at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital confirmed that Mutyasira died from polytrauma, multiple injuries resulting from a violent attack,” the NPA added.

Gowero and Makoni were each sentenced to 45 years in prison for the murd@r of Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services officer Tapiwa Mutyasira.
