Two Arrested for Exam Impersonation as ZRP Cracks Down on Fraud
Two individuals have been arrested within 48 hours for attempting to sit public examinations on behalf of other candidates, as the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) intensify efforts to stamp out exam fraud.
On Monday, October 13, Brighton Chinhenga (26) was caught at Mukondomi Secondary School in Buhera attempting to write the Mathematics Paper 1 examination for another student. The arrest came after vigilant school officials reported suspicious behaviour.
A day later, Mavis Phiri (32) was detained at Masotsha High School in Magwegwe North, Bulawayo, for trying to sit the Science Paper 1 exam on behalf of her sister. Police said tips from staff helped expose the impersonation before any papers were submitted.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests, describing them as part of the ZRP’s ongoing crackdown on examination malpractice. “These arrests demonstrate our commitment to ensuring the integrity of public examinations,” he said.
Exam impersonation is a criminal offence in Zimbabwe and carries severe penalties. Authorities have warned parents, guardians, and candidates that the police will maintain strict monitoring of examination centres throughout the season.
Both suspects remain in custody as investigations continue, with prosecutions expected once inquiries are complete.
