EIGHT young Zimbabwean martial artists have safely landed in Swansea, Wales, where they are set to represent the country at the International Combat Organisation (ICO) World Championships running from 15 to 19 October.

The team, drawn from the Zimbabwe Martial Arts Kobudo Team under the Zimbabwe Karate Union, is led by multi award winning coach Shihan Wilfred Mashaya.

Comprising four boys and four girls aged between eight and sixteen, mainly from the Zim Ninja Academy, the squad reflects Zimbabwe’s growing commitment to promoting youth and gender balance in sport.

The girls’ line-up features Thandeka Moyo, Dean Gwatah, Anotida Hove, and Anenyasha Hove, while the boys’ contingent includes Wilfred Mashaya Jr, Brian Mupindu Jr, Takudzwa Chizema, and Arnold Mudzengerere.

The young martial artists are expected to compete in a variety of categories, including Traditional Weapons, Creative Weapons, Freestyle Weapons, and Advanced Weapons, showcasing their mastery of tools such as the Bo (staff), Nunchaku, Tonfa, Katana (sword), Kama, and Sai.

The global event has drawn participants from more than a dozen countries, including Spain, Ireland, Ukraine, Italy, Cyprus, the USA, Wales, England, Scotland, Brazil, South Africa, Germany, France, Nepal, and Zimbabwe.

Speaking after arrival, Coach Mashaya said the team was in high spirits and ready to give their best.

“We are happy to have arrived safely. The team is excited and focused. This championship gives our young athletes a chance to gain international exposure and showcase Zimbabwe’s talent on the world stage,” he said.

Team Zimbabwe is expected to begin its events this week as they aim to bring home medals and make the nation proud.
