Former Real Madrid and Everton Winger Royston Drenthe Hospitalised After Suffering Stroke
Former Netherlands international Royston Drenthe has been hospitalised after suffering a stroke, his representatives confirmed on Monday.
The 38 year old ex-Real Madrid and Everton winger was admitted to hospital on Friday, according to FC de Rebellen, an agency that works with former professional footballers, including Drenthe.
In a statement released by the agency, they said:
“Last Friday, Royston Drenthe suffered a stroke. Drenthe is currently receiving good care and is in good hands. The team and those involved hope for a speedy recovery.”
Drenthe, who began his professional career with Dutch giants Feyenoord, rose to prominence after his standout performances at the 2007 UEFA European Under 21 Championship, where he helped the Netherlands win the title and was named Player of the Tournament. His success earned him a high-profile transfer to Real Madrid later that year.
During his time with the Spanish giants, Drenthe won the La Liga title in the 2007-08 season, sharing the dressing room with legends such as Raúl, Iker Casillas, and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
After leaving Madrid, the versatile winger had loan spells and permanent stints across Europe, including a season long loan at English Premier League side Everton in 2011–12, where he quickly became a fan favourite for his pace and flair. He later featured for Reading and Sheffield Wednesday before winding down his playing career in the Netherlands and lower divisions.
Following the news of his illness, several of Drenthe’s former clubs and teammates have sent messages of support. Everton posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“Everyone at Everton wishes Royston Drenthe a full and speedy return to full health after reports he’s been taken to hospital.”
Fans across the football community have also flooded social media with well wishes for the former winger, who has remained involved in the game through media appearances and projects with FC de Rebellen.
Drenthe’s representatives have not provided further details on his condition but assured supporters that he is receiving the best possible medical care.
As the football world rallies behind him, many are hoping for the speedy recovery of a player once known for his electric energy on the pitch and vibrant personality off it.
