Heartbreak as Student Dies in ZESA Electrocution Incident
A 19-year-old student tragically died after being electrocuted while working on a ZESA power line in Budiriro 1 Extension, Harare yesterday.
The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), a subsidiary of ZESA Holdings, confirmed the incident in a statement released later that day.
“The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) is profoundly saddened to confirm a tragic electrocution incident that occurred on Wednesday, 22 October 2025, in Budiriro 1 Extension, resulting in the death of a young man,” ZESA said.
ZETDC expressed its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the 19-year-old, who was reportedly attached to a private contractor.
According to preliminary investigations, ZETDC had not issued any permit or authorisation for work on the Medium Voltage (MV) line at the location where the incident occurred.
“The contractor was operating outside ZETDC’s jurisdiction and safety protocols,” the company added.
ZETDC reiterated that public safety remains its top priority and urged all individuals and organisations to engage the company directly for any electrical works involving the national electricity grid.
