President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to preside over the 19th graduation ceremony of Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) tomorrow at the institution’s main campus, where over 3 400 students will receive their degrees.

Of the graduands, 2 119 are female and 1 358 are male, highlighting the rising participation of women in higher education and their growing role in national development.

The ceremony, running under the theme “Delivering Innovation and Human Capital for National Impact,” underscores GZU’s focus on turning research into practical solutions that address community needs and contribute to Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 goal of attaining an upper middle-income economy.

The university has made strides in innovation through its Innovation Centre, which has developed technologies such as the Substation Monitoring and Transformer Protection System to prevent vandalism and theft of electricity infrastructure. It has also introduced a bird deterrent device to help wheat and indigenous grain farmers protect their crops.

Additionally, the Innovation Centre for Dryland Agriculture in Chivi is working closely with local farmers to improve productivity in drought-prone areas, providing practical solutions to some of the country’s most pressing agricultural challenges.

GZU officials say the initiatives reflect the institution’s commitment to fostering research that not only advances knowledge but also delivers tangible benefits to communities, positioning the university as a key driver of industrialisation and national development
