A Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) student, Panashe Nyakwima from Harare, has been arrested after allegedly stealing a pistol from his landlord and using it to commit an armed robbery at a local pharmacy.

According to police reports, Nyakwima reportedly broke into his landlord’s room and took the firearm before heading to a pharmacy in Harare, where he is said to have demanded cash at gunpoint. He allegedly fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.

Sources close to the investigation claim the 23-year-old student later used part of the stolen funds to buy groceries for his girlfriend, a move that has left many people stunned given his academic background and reputation as a “bright and disciplined” student.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest, stating that law enforcement officers acted swiftly after receiving reports of the robbery.

“The suspect is in custody, and investigations are ongoing. We urge members of the public to refrain from engaging in criminal activities, regardless of their circumstances,” said Nyathi.
