Telemedicine Booth Opens in Bulilima to Strengthen Fight Against Drug Abuse
A new Telemedicine booth was officially launched in Bulilima on Sunday, marking a major step in the community’s fight against drug and substance abuse. The facility will provide remote healthcare and counselling services, offering residents a confidential and accessible avenue for support.
The launch, attended by more than 1,000 people, highlighted the role of technology in addressing social challenges. This initiative, a collaboration between NetOne and ZimSmart Village, is the 11th booth to be established nationwide, demonstrating a sustained push for community-based health solutions.
Speaking at the event, Honourable Dingumuzi Phuthi, Bulilima MP and Deputy Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, said the booth represented a lifeline for young people. “This is more than a digital tool; it is a bridge to professional help. By providing quick and private access to counselling, we are breaking barriers that often prevent those struggling with addiction from seeking care,” he noted.
The launch also saw attendance from senior officials including the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Honourable Nqobizitha Mangaliso Ndlovu, and Mr. Richard Ndlovu of the Politburo, underscoring government backing for tech-driven social interventions.
Representing NetOne, Public Relations Manager Mr. Ernest Magadzire emphasized the company’s role in supporting public health. “Through our OneHealth initiative, this booth offers vital mental health services, counselling, and psychiatric support to community members in need,” he said.
The project aligns with health advocacy efforts championed by the First Lady, Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa, and supports the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) goal of promoting healthier communities.
Dr. Jokwiro, leader of ZimSmart Village, explained that the platform enables remote mental health consultations and encouraged community members, especially men, to take advantage of the service. “The first step to recovery is seeking help. This technology allows us to reach people without judgement,” he said.
Speaking for the Bulilima Rural District Council, Alderman Land Ndebele welcomed the initiative. “This facility is a vital tool in protecting our children from drugs. We will ensure it is safeguarded because it safeguards our future,” he said.
The Bulilima launch represents a significant stride in using digital infrastructure to tackle social issues, demonstrating that connectivity and technology can play a crucial role in combating drug and substance abuse at the community level.
