HARARE – A police officer has appeared in court after allegedly selling official police uniforms worth US$1,000 to another officer, who later resold them to colleagues.

Shamain Dzingai Muteswa (34) appeared before Harare magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa facing charges of criminal abuse of duty. He was not asked to plead to the allegations.

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, represented by Christopher Lloyd Tarenyika, is listed as the complainant in the case.

According to the State, Muteswa who lives at ZRP Fife Avenue Flats, Mkushi Academy in Harare was approached by another police officer, Justice Chasiya, seeking assistance in acquiring uniforms.

Chasiya allegedly requested 40 riot control trousers, 50 STU caps, and 20 grey police shirts. Muteswa is said to have provided the items and received US$1,000 in payment.

Investigators say Chasiya then sold the uniforms to various police officers. The matter reportedly came to light on October 23, 2025, when Chasiya was arrested and implicated Muteswa during questioning.

The case is still under investigation.
