Zambia Sack Avram Grant Ahead of AFCON 2025
Zambia have parted ways with head coach Avram Grant, just over a month before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicks off in Morocco.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) confirmed that both parties had agreed to a mutual separation, ending the Israeli coach’s tenure less than two years after his appointment.
FAZ General Secretary Machacha Shepande said the decision was made in the best interests of the national team as it prepares for the continental tournament.
“The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has agreed to mutually separate with Zambia Senior Men’s National Team coach Avram Grant. The two parties reached a mutual agreement, and FAZ wishes Mr. Grant the best of luck in his future endeavours,” said Shepande.
Grant, who took charge in December 2022, led Zambia to consecutive AFCON qualifications for the 2024 and 2025/26 editions. However, a string of disappointing performances in recent months including poor results at CHAN and a shaky start to the World Cup qualifiers is believed to have hastened his departure.
Zambia have been drawn in Group A for the upcoming AFCON, where they will face hosts Morocco, Mali, and Comoros.
FAZ said further details regarding the next steps and interim technical arrangements will be announced in due course.
