The Managing Director of the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), Abel Gurupira, has been dismissed with immediate effect after a nationwide uproar following a power blackout that abruptly interrupted President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament.

The unexpected outage plunged the legislative chamber into darkness midway through the president’s speech, forcing proceedings to continue under torchlight an incident that has since drawn widespread embarrassment and public criticism.

Reliable sources within the Ministry of Energy revealed that Energy and Power Development Minister July Moyo personally directed Gurupira’s dismissal and instructed Group CEO Cletus Nyachowe to enforce the decision without delay.

An internal probe has been initiated to uncover the exact cause of the disruption, which many believe reflects deeper challenges within Zimbabwe’s electricity network.

The blackout has since sparked heated debate nationwide, with citizens interpreting it as a symbolic reflection of the country’s governance and infrastructure struggles.

The fact that it occurred during a major national event has heightened calls for accountability and reform within the energy sector’s leadership.
