CCZ and Proma Events Africa Lead Nationwide Drive Against Fake Products
Zimbabwe has intensified its efforts to curb the rising circulation of counterfeit and substandard goods through the launch of the Counterfeit National Awareness Campaign on Counterfeits Roadshows, jointly organized by the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) and Proma Events Africa, with key Government Ministries supporting the initiative.
The event was attended by CCZ Chief Executive Officer Mrs. Rosemary Mpofu, Proma Events Africa CEO Mr. Blessing Jeke, the CCZ Board Chairman, Permanent Secretary Dr. Senza, who represented the Minister of State for Midlands Province, and the District Development Coordinator for Kwekwe, along with business leaders and consumer rights advocates.
Speaking during the official launch held at King Solomon Hotel in Kwekwe, Mrs. Mpofu said counterfeit goods are threatening public safety, eroding consumer confidence, and undermining legitimate businesses. She emphasized that the campaign aims to protect consumers, promote fair trade, and strengthen market integrity.
“Counterfeit and substandard consumer products present a serious and direct threat to public health and safety. They weaken public trust in brands and deprive the nation of vital revenue,” said Mrs. Mpofu, noting that the problem affects several sectors including food, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and automotive parts.
CCZ also introduced a new digital platform — Buy CCZ Verified — which uses the web, WhatsApp, and USSD technology to help consumers authenticate products before purchasing.
“The platform, set to launch before the end of the year, will enhance consumer protection through real-time product verification and counterfeit reporting,” she stated.
Proma Events Africa CEO Mr. Blessing Jeke announced the rollout of the National Counterfeit Goods Awareness Roadshows, which will tour all provinces to educate consumers and empower enforcement agencies.
“We are inviting manufacturers, retailers, and distributors to participate and showcase genuine products. Together, we can build consumer trust and promote ethical business practices,” said Mr. Jeke.
The campaign will culminate in a National Conference on Counterfeit Goods, where policy recommandations will be shared.
“Proma Events Africa remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote integrity in trade, protect consumers, and contribute to Zimbabwe’s economic growth under Vision 2030,” he added.
