Ministry Pushes for Local Tyre Production to Boost Industrial Growth
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Dr. T.U. Wushe, held a meeting today with commercial tyre importers to deliberate on issues surrounding tyre imports, road safety, and the development of a competitive local manufacturing sector.
During the engagement, Dr. Wushe reiterated the Ministry’s dedication to achieving the objectives of Vision 2030, which include promoting investment, ensuring affordable and safe transportation, and building strong industries that drive infrastructure development and economic growth.
He highlighted the need to cut down the national import bill by supporting domestic manufacturers, noting that local production plays a vital role in employment creation and boosting the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Dr. Wushe encouraged stakeholders to work together in exploring opportunities for local tyre production, retreading initiatives, diversified supply chains, and strategic tariff adjustments to be considered in the upcoming National Budget.
He stated that the discussion was focused on finding “realistic, job-creating solutions that will strengthen Zimbabwe’s motor industry and advance the country toward its Vision 2030 goal of becoming an upper-middle-income economy.”
With the country’s ongoing industrialisation, Dr. Wushe pointed out that tyre demand continues to grow across major sectors, including mining, transport, healthcare, and construction.
