Chirewa Tipped For Premier League Return as Wolves Boss Backs His Readiness
Zimbabwean midfielder Tawanda Chirewa could be set for a long awaited return to English Premier League action after interim Wolverhampton Wanderers coach James Collins expressed confidence in his readiness for senior football.
Chirewa has been turning out for the Wolves U21s following his loan spell at Huddersfield Town earlier this year, but Collins, who also oversees the development side, believes the 22 year old is now prepared to make the step up.
Speaking ahead of Wolves’ weekend clash against Chelsea, Collins revealed that Chirewa is among a few young players who could be included in the first team setup.
“We might get a couple of the young boys from my group around the squad as well who are capable of being around it,” Collins said. “Tawanda Chirewa, Mateus Mane, and Enzo Gonzalez have been with me all season and I think they’re good enough for first-team football, possibly even Premier League football.”
The coach admitted that introducing young players during a challenging run of results can be risky, but said his familiarity with the youngsters gives him confidence in their ability to handle the step up.
“It’s easier for me because I come from that environment. I know them and I trust them. Whether it’s me or the new manager who comes in, they will add real value to the club,” he added.
Chirewa, who last featured in the Premier League at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, was part of the Wolves squad that faced Chelsea in the Carabao Cup earlier this season. He made eight league appearances last term, all coming off the bench, and could now be in line to add to that tally this weekend.
