BREAKING: PSL scraps relegation for 2025 season as league prepares for expansion

The Premier Soccer League has opted to suspend relegation for the current season in a move set to reshape Zimbabwean top-flight football.

The decision, confirmed after a vote by top-flight clubs, is aimed at easing the transition toward a 20-team league structure that aligns with global football trends. With four regional champions already earning promotion, the development means the 2026 PSL campaign will feature 22 teams.

Under the new roadmap, six teams will be demoted at the end of the 2026 season, although these may not necessarily include clubs that have spent much of this year fighting to avoid the drop — among them Yadah, Greenfuel, Triangle, Manica Diamonds, Dynamos, Highlanders and Bikita Minerals.

The reprieve also extends to Kwekwe United, whose relegation had been confirmed two months ago. They will now remain in the top flight as part of the expanded league structure.

The move is expected to generate mixed reactions among supporters and analysts, with some welcoming the chance to stabilise clubs while others see it as an anti-climactic end to the season’s relegation battles.
