Former Zifa VP Urges Strict Compliance With Constitution

Former Zifa vice-president Omega Sibanda has called on the national football association to strictly follow its constitution, warning that deviation from established governance structures is already creating problems for the new leadership.

Sibanda said Zifa’s early decisions suggest a worrying trend of the executive committee overriding the authority of the association’s assembly — the body legally mandated to make key decisions.

“They are taking positions on matters that fall under the mandate of the assembly, not the executive,” Sibanda said. “The constitution is very clear. The assembly is the supreme decision-making authority in football governance.”

He argued that adherence to the constitution would resolve many of the challenges currently facing the association, adding that several recent actions have already breached constitutional procedure.

Sibanda cited the handling of elections as one of the issues that was “not managed in line with proper processes.” He also questioned the way Zifa approached the proposal to expand the Premier Soccer League to 20 teams, saying the matter was not handled according to the association’s guiding statutes.

He emphasised that strict observance of the written rules is essential for stability and transparency within football administration.
