Hwange Colliery Donates Mobile Science Labs to 75 Matabeleland North Schools
Hwange Colliery Company has rolled out 75 mobile science laboratories to schools across Matabeleland North, in a major boost to the government’s push to strengthen STEM education in the country.
The laboratories, which were distributed across seven districts, are expected to benefit more than 260,000 learners. The programme aims to close the gap in practical science learning, particularly for pupils in remote and hard to reach communities where schools often lack fully equipped laboratories.
Education officials say the mobile units will allow schools to conduct hands-on lessons in subjects such as physics, chemistry and biology, giving students exposure to experiments that have traditionally been difficult to deliver in rural settings due to limited infrastructure.
Hwange Colliery Company said the intervention aligns with national efforts to promote science based learning and prepare the next generation for opportunities in engineering, mining, technology and related fields.
The government has repeatedly emphasised the need to strengthen STEM capacity at grassroots level as Zimbabwe pushes towards an industry driven, knowledge-based economy.
The distribution of the mobile laboratories is expected to improve pass rates in science subjects and enhance learners’ competitiveness as they transition to higher levels of education.
More schools in other provinces are expected to benefit as similar partnerships between government and private sector organisations continue to expand.
