The Zimbabwe Republic Police will, from 22 to 23 November 2025, begin deploying breathalysers and speed-trap cameras across major highways as authorities step up efforts to curb drunk driving and excessive speeding ahead of the festive season. The period traditionally sees an increase in road traffic accidents linked to alcohol abuse, fatigue and negligent driving.

The nationwide exercise represents the country’s first extensive use of modern traffic-law enforcement technology. It also comes as the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) receives a new fleet to boost roadside checks, strengthen vehicle-fitness enforcement and support joint operations with other security agencies.

Police say the speed-detection equipment will help accurately identify offenders and reduce accident rates, while breathalysers are expected to act as a strong deterrent against driving under the influence. Officials describe the combined measures as a proactive approach aimed at restoring order on Zimbabwe’s roads.

Motorists have been urged to comply with all directives issued at checkpoints. Authorities warn that many of the country’s fatal crashes are caused by avoidable recklessness, emphasising that road-safety compliance remains a civic obligation for all drivers.
