The NetOne Albun Honde Valley Marathon has firmly established the Eastern Highlands as one of Zimbabwe’s leading adventure and sports tourism destinations, following a highly successful edition that attracted more than 1,800 participants.
The marathon held at the invitation of its organisers together with NetOne and Albun Chief Executive Officer, Mr Alois Bunjira, a former Zimbabwe international footballer and proud son of Mutasa’s Honde Valley drew widespread participation from athletes, local communities and national stakeholders.
Officiating at the event, the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon. Barbara Rwodzi, applauded the impressive turnout and reaffirmed Government’s commitment to supporting the marathon annually.
“The event has grown into a flagship attraction, strengthening Zimbabwe’s sports tourism portfolio.
The remarkable growth of Zimbabwe’s tourism sector in 2024, driven in part by major international endorsements that have boosted the country’s global visibility,” said Minister Rwodzi.
She cited the international recognition of Zimbabwe’s Gastronomy Tourism by UN Tourism, championed by the Patron of Tourism, First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, as a key milestone.
The Minister also referenced Jeremy Clarkson’s viral Top Gear feature which amassed more than 17 million views in which he described Zimbabwe, particularly the Honde Valley, as “the most beautiful country on earth.” Such endorsements, she said, contributed to Zimbabwe’s selection as Forbes’ Number One Destination for 2025, positioning the country at the centre of global tourism attention.
Guided by the Whole-of-Government Approach and President Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, the Ministry continues to promote sports tourism as a driver of rural development, economic inclusion and community empowerment.
“This year’s marathon showcased the Honde Valley’s breathtaking scenery while advancing development initiatives aimed at expanding accommodation options and promoting rural tourism in Hauna and surrounding areas,” Minister added.
The marathon’s success also spotlighted local communities, who are expected to benefit from rising tourist arrivals spurred by the event’s visibility and ongoing infrastructure improvements.
The event was graced by senior Government officials including the Minister of Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Hon. Advocate Misheck Mugadza, NetOne’s management and Board, Albun leadership, Chief Mutasa, athletes from across the country, and invited guests reflecting strong national support for tourism development and inclusive growth.
With momentum building, the NetOne Albun Honde Valley Marathon is poised to become one of Zimbabwe’s premier annual sporting and tourism highlights, enhancing the Eastern Highlands’ status on the global adventure tourism map.
