Outgoing Commander General Philip Valerio Sibanda stands alongside his successor, General Emmanuel Matatu, during the ZDF Handover and Takeover Parade.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday presided over the Handover and Takeover Parade of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), officially marking the transition of command from outgoing Commander Defence Forces, General Philip Valerio Sibanda, to his successor, General Emmanuel Matatu.

In a statement, President Mnangagwa praised the outgoing commander and reaffirmed confidence in the newly appointed military chief.

“I presided over the Handover and Takeover Parade of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, thanking General Philip Valerio Sibanda for his distinguished service and congratulating General Emmanuel Matatu on his appointment as Commander Defence Forces,” he said.

General Sibanda, one of Zimbabwe’s longest-serving military leaders, has been widely credited for maintaining organisational stability within the ZDF during a period marked by political and economic shifts.

His successor, General Matatu, steps into the top job at a time when Zimbabwe continues to recalibrate its defence priorities both domestically and within the broader Southern African Development Community (SADC) framework.

Public Reactions

The appointment stirred conversation across social media, with many Zimbabweans reacting to the transition.

Charmaine Moyo commended both officers, writing:
“Thank you for the astute service General Sibanda and congratulations on your promotion General Matatu🎉.”

Another user, posting as Goldman The Beucratic, framed the appointment as a strategic gain for the country’s security institutions:

“Solidarity to Gen. Matatu. Zimbabwe’s security architecture just got a boost. His leadership will undoubtedly fortify regional stability & SADC cooperation. Salute to Gen. Sibanda’s dedicated service.”

Patrick Mverechena echoed similar sentiments, stating:
“Congratulations to General Emmanuel Matatu on the new appointment, and thank you General Sibanda for your years of dedicated service.”
