Marinica Recalls Mudimu From Retirement for AFCON Campaign

Newly appointed Zimbabwe national team coach Mario Marinica has brought defender Alec Mudimu out of international retirement, paving the way for his return to the Warriors ahead of the forthcoming AFCON finals.

Mudimu, who is 30 and currently on the books of Welsh outfit Flint Town United, has been included in the provisional 51-man squad announced for the tournament.

His comeback is unexpected, given that he stepped away from international duty after going three years without a national team call-up.

The centre-back becomes the latest member of Zimbabwe’s AFCON 2021 squad to be reintegrated into the team.

Earlier, former captain Knowledge Musona and forward Khama Billiat had been persuaded to reverse their retirements by former coach Michael Nes.

Although both returned for the qualifiers, Billiat did not make the cut for the final AFCON squad.

Mudimu’s last appearance for the Warriors came during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
