ACZ Stages Emergency Crash Drill to Test Airport Disaster Readiness
The Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) yesterday mounted a full scale emergency response drill near Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, simulating an aircraft crash as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s aviation disaster preparedness.
The high alert exercise brought together key security and emergency units, the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Zimbabwe National Army, Fire Brigade and Ambulance Services in a coordinated operation designed to test real time reaction to an aviation accident.
ACZ officials said the simulation is part of mandatory international aviation safety requirements and reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to protecting lives and enhancing airport readiness.
During the drill, responders were assessed on their ability to secure the crash site, evacuate victims, manage fires and provide rapid medical attention under pressure. The coordinated display also demonstrated inter-agency cohesion, a critical component in managing real aviation emergencies.
ACZ said such exercises are crucial in exposing gaps, refining response procedures and ensuring Zimbabwe’s airports remain compliant with global aviation standards.
