Residents in the city centre were left shocked on Wednesday after a bolt of lightning struck the Tsungai Complex Building, damaging part of the structure and reportedly dislodging a Masvingo City Council clamp from a parked vehicle.

The lightning hit the upper corner of the building, breaking off a section of the wall. Moments later, the council clamp which had been locked onto a vehicle believed to belong to a village head, was seen coming loose, drawing attention from onlookers.

Witnesses said the incident happened quickly and caused confusion in the busy area.

“I saw a bright flash and then heard a loud bang from the building,” said a shop attendant who was nearby. “A piece of the wall fell off, and shortly after that, people started shouting that the clamp had come off the car.”

City officials are yet to comment on the incident, which has sparked discussions among residents, with some calling it a rare occurrence and others dismissing it as coincidence.
