The Zimbabwe senior women’s football team, the Mighty Warriors, are set to leave for Malawi today ahead of the Three Nations Women’s Tournament, which kicks off tomorrow at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Zimbabwe will face hosts Malawi in their opening match at 5pm, before taking on Zambia on December 2 in what will be their final game of the round-robin competition. The team that finishes with the most points will be crowned champions.

The tournament marks the Mighty Warriors’ first competitive action since February, when they featured in the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola in South Africa.

ZIFA chief executive officer Yvonne Manwa said the Malawi trip is part of efforts to increase game time for the team as the association begins implementing its recently launched Women’s Football Strategy.

“We want the ladies to start participating more as we build towards future competitions,” she said. “This FIFA window presented an opportunity for them to play, and it aligns with our Women’s Football Strategy, where increased participation is a key pillar.”
