Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Honourable Barbara Rwodzi has urged Zimbabweans in the diaspora to invest in rural tourism, saying their capital and expertise are critical to job creation, cultural preservation and national development.

Speaking on behalf of Hon. Rwodzi, the ministry’s Chief Director Ms Tarirai Musonza at the official opening of Chihera Leisure Centre in Mutoko, Hon. Rwodzi said the Diaspora-led project developed by Choice Kanyongo under the leadership of Chief Charehwa being a model for the government’s Rural Tourism Cluster strategy.

The centre features a bar and sunk braai area, a swimming pool, a conference facility, an on-site butchery and plans for 20 guest rooms.
“Diaspora investments like this embody President Mnangagwa’s mantra: Nyika Inovakwa neVene Vayo,”she said.
Hon.Rwodzi urged Zimbabweans abroad to reinvest in their home communities.
Hon. Rwodzi said such projects stimulate local economies, preserve cultural heritage and advance national development priorities under Vision 2030.

She highlighted Zimbabwe’s improving tourism reputation, citing Forbes Magazine’s designation of the country as the world’s number one destination for 2025 and called on the diaspora to capitalise on the momentum.

Hon Rwodzi highlighted immediate economic benefits from the Chihera project, including job creation during construction and increased demand for local suppliers.
Project developers said the centre was implemented in consultation with traditional leadership to ensure community buy-in.

Chihera Leisure Centre is presented by the ministry as proof that diaspora investment can deliver competitive rural tourism products. Government officials say replicating such projects across rural districts could expand tourism’s reach and deliver wider economic impact.
