Highlanders Respond to Chivayo’s Proposal to Appoint Benjani as Head Coach
Highlanders FC have moved to clarify their position after businessman Wicknell Chivayo proposed the appointment of former Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari as the club’s next head coach. Chivayo announced on Monday that he had spoken to Mwaruwari, who indicated he was willing to take up the role if Chivayo personally met his financial requirements.
The businessman has since formally presented the proposal to the Bulawayo giants, recommending Benjani as a replacement for outgoing coach Pieter De Jongh, whose contract will not be renewed.
In a statement, Highlanders expressed gratitude for Chivayo’s offer but stressed that the club must follow its established recruitment procedures.
“Highlanders Football Club recognises the gesture by our benefactor Sir Wicknell Chivayo, who proposed to support Mr Benjani Mwaruwari should he be engaged as the club’s head coach,” the club said. “While the gesture is appreciated, we remind our stakeholders that the club has clear processes that guide the hiring of technical and playing staff.”
Bosso also revealed that they are already close to concluding talks with another prospective coach who is expected to take over ahead of the new season. The club said the appointment will be announced once all formalities have been completed.
Highlanders thanked Chivayo for his continued support and said they look forward to further collaboration as the club approaches its 100 year anniversary in 2026.
