ZTF Eyes Rising Talent as ITF Tournament Returns to Bulawayo
The Zimbabwe Tennis Federation (ZTF) is aiming to harness the promising talent on display at the ongoing two-week International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament in Bulawayo, which has brought top-level junior competition back to the city.
The event offers local players a crucial opportunity to gain international ranking points while testing themselves against regional and global opponents. ZTF officials say the tournament is key to player development and strengthening Zimbabwe’s footprint on the international tennis circuit.
Qualifiers opened the competition, with several Zimbabwean players progressing to the main draw. However, it was a tough outing for 16-year-old Bradley Nyamunokora, who fell 6-1, 6-2 to top seed Alex Lap Hung Hu of Hong Kong in his opening match.
Nyamunokora, a student at Millerite International School, admitted the challenge was steep but remained optimistic.
“It was a difficult game facing the top seed. I’ll go back, correct my mistakes, and come better in the second round,” he said.
Hu, who has featured in three previous editions in Bulawayo, said he is targeting an even stronger run as the tournament progresses.
“It feels great to come here and win. I enjoy these tournaments, and I’m now familiar with these courts,” he said.
This year’s tournament has attracted 90 countries, an increase from the usual 70, reflecting growing global interest.
“We received huge entries this time, which speaks volumes about the quality of competition. It’s going to be two weeks of action-packed tennis,” said Tournament Director Ruggs Chikunichawa.
Bulawayo continues to solidify its place as the home of ITF junior events in Zimbabwe, boosting the city’s reputation as a breeding ground for emerging sporting talent.
