The High Court of Zimbabwe is set to deliver sentencing on Monday for businessmen Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu, who were found guilty of using fake documents to secure a lucrative tender under the Presidential Goat Pass-on Scheme.

The duo’s conviction marks a significant milestone in the fight against corruption, with the State alleging that their actions led to a staggering US$7 million loss to the Government.

Chimombe and Mpofu were convicted of fraudulently obtaining the tender, which was meant to benefit rural farmers in the country’s goat-rearing program.

The scheme, aimed at empowering local farmers, was compromised by the duo’s deceitful actions, causing significant financial losses to the State.

Prosecutors presented overwhelming evidence, including fake bank statements and other falsified documents, which were used to deceive officials into awarding the tender to the duo’s company. The court found that the pair had deliberately misrepresented their company’s capabilities and financial standing to secure the deal.

The sentencing, set for Monday, is eagerly awaited by many who have been following the case. The outcome will serve as a precedent in the fight against corruption and tender fraud, sending a strong message to those who seek to exploit public resources for personal gain.

The State is expected to push for a harsh sentence, citing the severity of the offense and the significant financial losses incurred by the Government.
