Mafume Slams Council for Delays in City Sports Centre Renovations
Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume has criticised council departments for dragging their feet on the rehabilitation of the City Sports Centre, a task he says was ordered directly by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Addressing a full council meeting on Wednesday, Mafume said he was concerned that any major event held at the council-owned complex would expose the poor state of the facility.
“What is going on at the City Sports Centre? The President instructed us to refurbish that facility during his visit, and this was supposed to be treated as urgent. I do not want to see another event hosted there before the necessary renovations are done,” he said.
The City Sports Centre, along with several other municipal properties particularly sports and recreational infrastructure has deteriorated significantly, mirroring the wider service delivery challenges facing the capital.
