A 54-year-old woman from NkowaNkowa in Limpopo has been taken into custody after she was found to be running what authorities describe as a “private prison” from her home.

The unusual incident happened on 2 December 2025, when the woman allegedly began locking up people who caused trouble at her tavern.

According to police, she detained 36 individuals, most of whom were accused of drinking at her establishment and failing to settle their bills.

She is also said to have confined men who became violent, particularly those who assaulted women while intoxicated.

The case has sparked debate about informal disciplinary measures used in some communities.

Investigators are now looking deeper into the matter to determine how long this practice went on and to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
