MUNICIPAL POLICE ROUND UP STREET KIDS IN CITY CENTRE
Municipal police officers, led by Chief Superintendent Mhizha, conducted a roundup of street kids in the Central Business District (CBD) today in response to rising reports of harassment and theft targeting city residents. The operation aimed to restore public order and address growing concerns about the involvement of street children in criminal activities.
Authorities say the street kids have increasingly become a menace, intimidating residents, loitering in public spaces, and committing thefts across the city. In recent months, incidents involving street children have reportedly escalated, with some being implicated in more serious and violent crimes.
Chief Superintendent Mhizha stated that the operation was part of a coordinated effort to remove vulnerable children from the streets while engaging social services to provide support and rehabilitation. “Our priority is to ensure the safety of residents while also giving these children a chance to access care, shelter, and guidance,” Mhizha said.
Residents welcomed the intervention, noting that the street kids’ presence in the CBD had led to growing anxiety and fear. Police have promised continued patrols and engagements with social welfare organisations to address the root causes of street child homelessness and delinquency.
Authorities have also urged members of the public to report suspicious or criminal activity and to support initiatives aimed at helping street children reintegrate into society.
