Nigeria Lodge Formal Complaint to FIFA Over DR Congo Player Eligibility
Nigeria have reportedly submitted an official complaint to FIFA questioning the eligibility of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and several other players registered by the Democratic Republic of Congo, in a move that could have major implications for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification race.
According to reports, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has raised concerns over the nationality status of Wan-Bissaka, alleging that his switch of international allegiance to DR Congo was not fully completed in line with FIFA regulations. Nigeria further claim that the former England international is in possession of a European passport, which they argue may conflict with Congolese nationality laws.
A key element of the complaint centres on DR Congo’s legal framework, with Nigeria alleging that Congolese law does not permit dual citizenship. On that basis, the NFF argues that any player holding another nationality alongside Congolese citizenship may be ineligible to represent the country at international level.
In addition to Wan-Bissaka, Nigeria are said to have flagged the status of several other DR Congo players, claiming they also hold French passports. The NFF believes this raises further questions over compliance with both national laws and FIFA eligibility rules.
As a result, Nigeria are reportedly pushing for FIFA to investigate the matter and consider sanctions, including the possible disqualification of DR Congo. Should such a decision be made, it could significantly alter the qualification landscape and potentially allow Nigeria to advance to the World Cup playoffs.
FIFA is yet to issue an official response to the complaint, while DR Congo have also not publicly commented on the allegations. The situation is expected to attract close scrutiny as the governing body reviews the submissions and supporting documentation from all parties involved.
